Collection: The Living Fen - RSPB Lakenheath

The Living Fen Collection

Photographs from one of the Fens’ most remarkable wildlife landscapes.

RSPB Lakenheath Fen is a place shaped by transformation — once agricultural land, now a remarkable restored wetland where reedbeds, open water, grazing marshes and woodland provide a home for an extraordinary range of wildlife.

I photograph the Fen as I experience it: sometimes through its wildlife, sometimes through its colour, and sometimes by looking closely at the small things that are easy to walk past.

These are photographs to remind you to look closer.

From the vibrant colour of summer poppies to a dragonfly resting in the reeds, a butterfly moving through wildflowers, a ladybird amongst blossom or the quiet presence of swans on the water, each image captures a different part of the Fen.

Available as fine-art prints, with selected images also available as mugs, coasters and other homeware.

Whether you have visited Lakenheath Fen yourself, love its wildlife, or simply want a piece of the Suffolk fenland landscape at home, each photograph carries a little of this remarkable place with it.

A Note From RSPB Lakenheath Fen

We are very pleased to have Gwen’s work on display at RSPB Lakenheath Fen, and to be able to showcase the beauty of our local fenland wildlife through her work. All of the images of Gwen’s that we display were taken locally, and many at our reserve in particular, which means a lot to us and will no doubt delight our visitors too.

We are delighted that Gwen is able to donate a portion of the sale from each item displayed to the reserve, so her exhibit will help us to take care of the wildlife here and her customers can know that they are supporting us as well as Gwen.

At RSPB Lakenheath Fen, we strive to take care of our precious fragment of restored Fen — of which only 1% remains following centuries of drainage for agricultural purposes. Fenland and the reedbed it supports represent a crucial habitat for many of the UK’s special and threatened wildlife that can live nowhere else, such as Bearded Tits and Bitterns.

The reserve also supports three pairs of breeding Cranes each summer, along with multiple pairs of Marsh Harriers and a range of smaller, scarce birds like Spotted Flycatcher and Grasshopper Warbler, as well as over twenty different kinds each of butterflies and dragonflies.

We hope that the reserve can act as a gateway to the Fens for the local community — to come and enjoy spending time here and to connect with the very special wildlife that call the reserve home.

To keep up with what is happening on the reserve, you can find us on Facebook (RSPB Lakenheath Fen) or visit the RSPB Lakenheath Fen website.
